Top Anime List

Here is a list of my favourite animes, given a somewhat arbitrary rating that can’t really be dissected in any meaningful way, but are nonetheless ordered based on how much I like and would recommend them. Bear in mind that I like to think of anime as art, not entertainment.

This list is subject to change at any time.

Cowboy Bebop

Serial Experiments Lain

9
Haibane Renmei
Neon Genesis Evangelion/The End of Evangelion

I think you’ve started a fascinating blog, and one I look forward to following.

Although I wouldn’t have expected to see Haibane Renmei and Not Even A Jelly Donut in the same Top Anime List…. :)

Thanks so much! I guess I like them for different reasons, hahaha. I really do think that Steins;Gate does a fantastic job in terms of its storytelling (unlike most, I actually think that the slow, nonchalant start is one of its strong points), while Haibane Renmei is, well, it’s Haibane Renmei. What more do I need to say?

I’ve only recently begun watching all the cult classics, and they absolutely blow the kinds of anime I’ve been watching for the past 10 years out of the water, so this list is bound to expand rapidly.

        You’re welcome.

Given that I’ve actually finished my Twenty Days of Haibane Renmei posts you won’t find any disagreement from me on that topic. :)

(I will get back to finishing Thirty Days of Planetes eventually, promise!)

I haven’t read that yet, but I do plan to read it in the near future. A post on Haibane Renmei is in the works as well. I look forward to what you have to say about the rest of the Planetes episodes :) (Btw, iirc, the manga isn’t as bad as the anime in terms of gender roles.)

Hi! In an attempt to drive some eyeballs your way I nominated you for the Liebster Award here:

    http://piratesobg.wordpress.com/2013/12/22/the-liebster-awards/

Feel free to ignore it,or play along (depending on your mood, willingness to write etc).

    Cheers!

    • Yingchen says:

Hey! Thanks so much for the nomination! I do plan to play along, but I happen to be on an overseas trip at the moment, so it’ll have to wait :(

By the way, does your Not Even A Jelly Donut refer to Evangelion? I thought it was Steins;Gate at first because that anime involves jelly at some point, but Evangelion makes more sense, especially given what you say about that show on your blog.

      • John Samuel says:

Your welcome, and I’m looking forward to what you have to say.

Not Even a Jelly Donut is indeed Evangelion but isn’t a mangling I can take credit for. The honour for that belongs to author Ryk Spoor.

Speaking of whom if you haven’t read the Boundary/Threshold/Portal trilogy that Ryk co-authored with Eric Flint then you should.

I am a bit surprised Ghost in the Shell isn’t on the list (both the original movie and the 2 series). Have you not watched them, or did they just not make the cut?
